Process: Mouse

My first attempt at painting. I originally thought of this as just copying, but as I continued to work on it I lost my lines and had to use my "artistic" abilities to make it look right. Hahaha!!

Final version

To see the process I went though, click on the jump...

1. Outline traced. Blue background and face painted in.

2. Face painted over with a lighter colour. Lost the lines for the eyes and snout.

3. Painted in ears/nose with Burnt Sienna. Roughed in eyes and snout.
4. Repainted face white and background lighter blue.
Still don't like background. Need to lighten some more.

5. Repainted the whole thing. I like this blue better, and by going over the entire image I was able to keep the brush strokes smooth around the head. It's a mixture of 90% Titanium White and 10% Phthalo Blue.
6. Glazed the face in. Multiple coats with a blow dryer in between to speed up the drying time. I felt the face was too white so the last glaze had just a touch of Burnt Sienna to soften it.
7. Used my filbert to daub in the dark parts with Burnt Sienna and Glazing Liquid. I also kept spraying the palette and the painting with water that had a few drops of retarder in it to prolong the drying time. I think I'm liking my filbert the best so far. I better go buy some more and different sizes. I also like my rigger brush.

8. Coloured in the dark areas with a "black" glaze, made up of magenta, green and yellow. It looks too green IRL and I've decided that since it's a cartoon character, and there is so much of it, using a real black will be ok. I'm feeling a bit of trepidation about the eyes.

Final version. No more fiddling!
