This is a painting I did from a photo. It's the first one I consider a real painting because I painted it to give away not just for my own pleasure or practice.
I painted it for the nurse I was paired with at my mental health placement this term. I didn't want to give her the usual card and gift certificate and she was like an auntie to this dog and always talked about how much she missed her since she departed a few months ago.
She seemed very happy when she unwrapped it and proceeded to show everyone in the office what I had painted for her :-)
I'm not especially happy with it, but I think I will re-do it in a larger format, just for my own knowledge.
The dog was a Westie and her fur was drying and matted after frolicking on the beach.
The fur around her mouth was dirty and curling under. I tried to do an under-painting to give depth and shadows to the fur but I don't think I picked the correct colours.
I decided to not cover the eyes as much as they were in the photo, since "the eyes are the windows to the soul" type thing.
Her lower body is looking like a Springer Spaniel! I should have given her legs!
I've realized, after looking at photos of the painting, that the log sitting at the water's edge is kind of floating in midair.
The little blob against the far shore is supposed to be a blurry cargo ship, many of which populate English Bay here in Vancouver.
